Insurance industry players converged in Nairobi over the weekend to celebrate top-performing companies and agents at the 2025 AKI Awards, hosted by the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI).
Britam General Insurance scooped the top spots in the General Insurance category, winning General Insurance Company of the Year and the General Insurance Innovation Award. The awards recognise companies whose agents achieve the highest aggregate points based on policies sold and premium volume, as well as those demonstrating innovative products and distribution channels. Britam General was also recognised for the Most Improved Performance.
In the Group Life Insurance category, CIC Life Assurance was named Group Life Insurance Company of the Year. Equity Life won awards for Lowest Loss Ratio and Innovation.
In the Individual Life Insurance category, Britam Life Insurance took home both the Life Insurance Company of the Year Award and the Innovation Award, while APA Life Assurance was recognised for recording the highest percentage growth in new policies during the competition period. Pioneer Assurance was recognized as the company with most improved performance.
The event coincided with global celebrations of International Women’s Day. Addressing the gathering, AKI Chairman Mr. Tom Gitogo, highlighted the growing representation of women across the insurance industry, from boardrooms to executive management and among insurance agents. He noted that 67% of the 2025 qualifying agents were women, reflecting positive progress in leadership and participation.
A total of 1,195 insurance sales agents qualified for the awards, up from 1,084 in 2024, representing a 9.5% increase.
In the General Insurance Agents category, Beatrice Wanjiku Kariuki of Old Mutual General Insurance was named General Insurance Agent of the Year. Geoffrey Mandela of Jubilee Health Insurance and Margaret Muthoni Mwaura of APA Insurance placed second and third respectively.
The Life Insurance Agent of the Year – New Business Award 2025 was won by Doreen Mwendwa Mwirigi of Madison Life Assurance. Doreen was also recognised as the youngest life insurance agent. AKI Executive Director Tom Gichuhi noted that the event theme, “Customer First: Reimagining Customer Service through Digital Transformation,” reflects the Association’s focus on improving customer experience across the industry.
“We will soon roll out an industry-wide Customer Service Charter, supported by technology, to establish minimum service standards across the insurance sector,” he said.
